What is the cost to make a solar panel?
Off-Grid System i.e., not connected to the grid and also known as Standalone System. It requires battery backup for energy consumption during the night. It doesn't require battery backup if it is going to be used only during the daytime. For eg. If you are using it for 3–4 hours in peak sunshine hour to pump water from the well for irrigation purposes.
This kind of solar energy system is mostly used in rural areas where there is limited/no grid connectivity. In the USA, There may be some State Government Subsidy depending upon the policy of various states to the non-commercial consumers.
On-Grid or Grid-Connected System i.e., connected to the grid via a net-metering process. It doesn't require battery backup and therefore it is cheaper than a standalone system. This kind of solar energy system is mostly used in cities and towns.
What is Net-Metering?
Net metering is a billing mechanism that credits solar energy system owners for the electricity they add to the grid. For example, when a rooftop solar energy system produces electricity, the electricity first serves the owner's onsite electricity demand, and any excess electricity is provided to the utility grid. If this solar energy system generates more electricity than the load uses, owners receive bill credits which can be used to offset future usage from month to month. At the end of the month, the consumer’s electric bill reflects the total energy used minus the electricity that was produced by the solar system. This process of calculating the total power used is called Net Metering.
